IVF in the Czech Republic, for Americans

Czech law is stricter than Spain's or Greece's about who can be treated. If it fits your situation, here is what it says and what we would check.

Assisted reproduction in the Czech Republic is governed by Act No. 373/2011 Coll. on specific health services. The law is written for an infertile couple of a woman and a man. That makes the first question simple: if you are planning treatment as a single woman or as a couple of two women, the Czech Republic is currently not an option, and we will look at Spain or Greece with you instead. A reform that would allow treatment for single women has been proposed, but it has not been passed.

What we would check for you

If the law allows your treatment, the details that shape your plan come from the clinic. We ask each clinic we suggest the same questions and get the answers in writing.

  • Timing against the age limit: if you are close to 49, how the clinic reads the limit and whether your planned dates fit.
  • An itemized written quote: what is included, and what is extra, such as medication, freezing or genetic testing.
  • What the clinic needs from you as a couple: the documents and consents both partners have to sign, and when.
  • Monitoring scans near home: whether the clinic accepts scan and blood test results from a clinic in your state.
  • How many trips you need, and whether your partner has to travel too.
  • What happens to frozen embryos: storage at the clinic, and what moving them later would involve.
  • Who you talk to: whether you have an English-speaking contact at the clinic during your treatment.
