IVF in Greece, for Americans

Greek law allows treatment up to age 54, with an extra approval step from age 50. Here is what it says, and where the answer depends on your case.

Assisted reproduction in Greece is governed by Law 3305/2005, as amended by Law 4958/2022. The law allows treatment up to the age of 54, and from 50 each case needs approval from the National Authority for Medically Assisted Reproduction. Single women can be treated. For some situations, such as couples of two women and donor anonymity, the position is less settled, so we confirm it with the clinic for your case rather than give you a general answer.

Couples of two women Ask us. The rules for couples of two women are not clear-cut in Greece. Legally, one partner is treated as a single woman. Whether reciprocal IVF (one partner's eggs, the other partner carries the pregnancy) is permitted is not clear, and sources conflict.
Couples of a man and a woman Can be treated

Egg and sperm donation The 2022 reform changed the rules on donor anonymity. We confirm the current position with the clinic for your case.

What we would check for you

In Greece, several of the answers depend on your details. We ask each clinic we suggest the same questions and get the answers in writing.

  • The approval step if you are 50 or over: what the clinic submits to the National Authority, and how it affects your dates.
  • The notarial deed, if you are a single woman: what it involves and whether it can be done during your trip.
  • Your options as a couple of two women, in writing from the clinic, before you plan anything else.
  • Donor anonymity: how the clinic applies the current rules to donor eggs or sperm in your case.
  • An itemized written quote: what is included, and what is extra, such as medication, freezing or genetic testing.
  • Monitoring scans near home: whether the clinic accepts scan and blood test results from a clinic in your state.
  • Who you talk to: whether you have an English-speaking contact at the clinic during your treatment.
